TURKISH shipbuilding activity has accelerated hugely in recent years, to the extent that Turkey is now the fifth leading shipbuilder in the world, with a 1.5% market share. Over the past four years it is estimated that the countrys shipbuilding capacity has risen by around 65%, and now stands at about 1.4 m dwt annually.

MORE than 300 people have paid tribute to two giants and a rising star of the Turkish shipping industry at the third annual Lloyds List Turkish Shipping Awards in Istanbul, write Lloyds List correspondents . Newly constructed Besiktas Shipyard recently won its most important repair project to rebuild the 2,900-lane-metre ro-ro UN Adriyatik (built 2001), which was destroyed by fire off Croatia last year. The Turkish yard was completed in 2007 and is just one of 40 greenfield facilities in the Yalova area on the Gulf of Izmit.
